Tisch College Distinguished Speaker Series: New Jersey’s Governor Phil Murphy & First Lady Tammy Murphy
Tuesday, April 13 | 5 - 5:45 PM ET | Virtual Event
Join Tisch College for a conversation with New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy & New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy. Governor Phil Murphy was elected in 2018. Since taking office, he has signed legislation putting New Jersey on the path to a $15-an-hour minimum wage, enacted the nation’s strongest equal-pay law to combat gender wage discrimination, and expanded the state's Paid Family Leave provisions. He has also focused on combatting climate change, increased funding for public schools and NJ TRANSIT, and restored state funding for Planned Parenthood and women’s health programs. He has made New Jersey a national leader in tackling gun violence and has expanded protections for the state’s immigrant and LGBTQ communities. Before taking office, Governor Murphy served as New Jersey’s sole representative on the board of the NAACP, and as Finance Chair of the Democratic National Committee. First Lady Tammy Murphy focuses on infant and maternal health, climate change education, and fostering women-owned businesses throughout New Jersey. She has worked to create Family Festivals across the state to increase access to resources for mothers, children, and families; worked with the New Jersey Department of Education to incorporate climate change throughout the K-12 state education guidelines; and partnered with the New Jersey Economic Development Authority to increase angel investing in women-led businesses.. Tammy Murphy previously worked in finance in the United States and Europe and currently serves as Secretary and charter member of The Climate Reality Action Fund, an organization founded by former Vice-President Al Gore.
This event is supported by the Political Science Department.
