Civic Life Lunch – Somerville on the Move: A City Transformed & Forging a New Path Forward with Mayor Joe Curtatone

Wednesday, October 27 | 12 PM ET | Virtual Event

Join Tisch College for a conversation with Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone. For almost two decades, Mayor Curtatone has led the City of Somerville through extraordinary change. Among his many accomplishments in office, Mayor Curtatone stabilized city finances while expanding services; implemented critical reforms in the Somerville Police Department and launched a Racial and Social Justice Office focused on reimagining policing in Somerville as well as dismantling systemic racism and social inequality; developed an ambitious plan to increase housing affordability; spearheaded regional leadership on climate change and the Somerville Climate Forward Plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050; and provided unwavering advocacy and support for immigrant residents. He has also invested in the health and wellbeing of Somerville residents through its “Shape Up Somerville” program focused on food access and active living as well as the nation’s first wellbeing survey. He has fought for advancements in education and sustainable transportation by investing heavily in the Somerville Public Schools and improving infrastructure to make Somerville one of the most walkable and bikeable cities in the nation. Mayor Curtatone’s leadership and accomplishments have earned the city many distinctions, including “the best-run city in Massachusetts” (The Boston Globe), one of the "100 Best Communities for Youth" in the nation (America's Promise Alliance), and three "All-America City Awards" (the National Civic League). Prior to his service as Mayor, Curtatone served as one of Somerville’s four councilors at-large. He is the longest-serving Mayor in the City’s history and will not be seeking reelection this November.

This event is generously cosponsored by the Political Science Department, JumboVote and the Office of Government & Community Relations.
