First-Year Global Programs: Application Process

All students admitted to Tufts University as first-year undergraduates are eligible to participate in the Tufts 1+4 Bridge Year. Due to degree restrictions, only incoming students in the School of Arts & Sciences may apply to the Tufts Civic Semester. BFA and SMFA combined degree students as well as participants in the BLAST program are also inelegible to apply to the Civic Semester.

Visit our page on Costs and Financial Support for more information about financial aid that you may want to consider as you apply.

Note: For non-U.S. citizens, acceptance is contingent upon your ability to secure a visa to the U.S. for orientation/coursework on the Tufts campus (and in the case of Brazil or India as part of Tufts 1+4, for post-service training), as well as a long-term visa to your service location.

How and When to Apply

Interested students should complete the First-Year Global Programs application from their Tufts University online application status page. The link to your application status page can be found in the email you receive from Tufts Admissions confirming that your application was submitted. On the application, you will select whether you are applying to the Civic Semester or the 1+4 Bridge Year. You may only apply to one program. The application includes a few brief essay questions to learn more about an applicant’s background, skills, and interest in the program. Neither an application nor acceptance to a First-Year Global Program represent a binding commitment, and we invite all interested students to apply.

Apply with your application to Tufts University: Applicants are invited to submit their First-Year Global Program application along with their application to Tufts University, by submitting it anytime after submitting an application for undergraduate admissions. This is a great way to express your interest early on and submit all your applications at the same time!

Apply after being admitted to Tufts University: You can also choose to apply to the program after receiving your Tufts acceptance letter. We encourage applicants who are admitted through Early Decision to participate in an early application round for the First-Year Global Programs by submitting their application by March 9. Students admitted through regular decision can apply by April 15 for admissions notification before the Tufts enrollment deadline of May 1. All admitted Tufts students can apply to the program until the final deadline of May 15, 2020. Please note that you must enroll at Tufts in order to enroll in the Civic Semester or the 1+4 Bridge Year.

Interviews: For each of our three application rounds, finalists will be invited to participate in online interviews with Tufts staff and a representative from the collaborating organization for which you are being considered. Interviews are scheduled for 30 minutes and provide an opportunity for us to get to know you better, as well as allow you to ask questions about the program. If you speak the local language of the country for which you’re applying, you may be asked to respond to a few questions in that language.
