Tufts faculty are critical to every facet of Tisch College’s work. Through coursework and co-curricular activities, they prepare students to lead robust and ethical civic lives. Through research and scholarship, they contribute new knowledge about civic engagement and about issues of public concern. And by partnering with local communities, lending their expertise in public affairs, and other acts of advocacy and service, they make a tangible impact on society.
While no faculty members hold primary appointments at Tisch College, several hold secondary appointments and collaborate frequently with Tisch College, integrating civic engagement into their teaching and research and advising on academic matters.
Tisch College Senior Fellows are focused intensely on the connections between civic life and their chosen field, be it media, human-animal interaction, or biomedical education. Tisch College Faculty Fellows, selected yearly, receive funding and support for individual projects or course development related to civic life, and meet as a cohort to discuss shared challenges and opportunities. Other faculty members teach Tisch College-sponsored courses, conduct research through the Tisch College Community Research Center, and more.
In addition, we are currently working to make Tisch College and Tufts University the academic home for Civic Studies, an emerging interdisciplinary field that includes empirical or theoretical scholarship that investigates civic life, either as the core focus or as an important component of research on another topic. As a part of this effort, which already includes initiatives like the Summer Institute of Civic Studies and the Frontiers of Democracy conference, we will hire a cluster of new faculty members whose fields relate to Civic Studies will be co-located at Tisch College and in other schools throughout Tufts university. These faculty members will offer new courses and co-curricular activities and whose scholarship and research will add to the field of Civic Studies across a variety of academic disciplines.
