The Institute for Democracy & Higher Education (IDHE) is dedicated to shifting college and university priorities, practices, and culture to strengthen democracy and advance social and political equity. Through research, resource development, and advocacy, the institute focuses explicitly on college student political learning and engagement in democratic practice.

The Institute for Democracy & Higher Education aims to create and disseminate new knowledge that will advance higher education’s role in the civic and political learning and engagement of their students. Our research is spearheaded by the National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement, a unique study of the voting and registration rates of college students at more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the country. Other quantitative and qualitative research builds on NSLVE and amplifies its impact.
