2023 Tisch Community Research Forum: Identity, Impact, and Innovation

May 3, 2023 in the Lantern Room, Joyce Cummings Center, 9:30 am - 12 noon (breakfast at 9 am)

Valuable and trailblazing community research is happening all around us, across all Tufts campuses and in collaboration with wide range of community partners. To celebrate and learn from this, the Tisch College Community Research Center (TCRC), Tisch College Student Programs, and the Tisch Office of Community Partnerships invite students and community partners to share their community-centered research at the second annual Tisch Community Research Forum. The 2023 Tisch Community Research Forum theme: Identity, Impact, and Innovation.

The forum is an opportunity to share and learn from a wide range of community research. Community-centered research advances our collective learning towards an inclusive democracy and multiracial society through co-creating new knowledge. As we wrestle with ongoing questions around researcher positionality, new ideas, and different kinds of community outcomes, we invite Tufts students and community partners to share research that extends our thinking about the role of identity, innovation, and impact - open to all disciplines, fields, and communities.

A keynote panel will kick off our thinking on “Identity, Impact, and Innovation,” followed by concurrent sessions (research presentations and roundtable discussions). Participants can also share visual representations of their research through posters in the hall. All are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided. The deadline for presentation and discussion proposals: March 31, 2023, 11:59 pm.

Linking Storytelling to Community Research and Action: A student discussion

You have heard many stories today and yesterday. What about storytelling to foster community action for tomorrow? As a collaborative approach that involves reflexivity and reciprocity, storytelling is an emerging community-engaged research method. Michelle de Leon and Leanne Loo will explore the relationship between storytelling and action that is collaborative. They will share their experiences with Chinatown and the Passamaquoddy Tribe that emphasize the link between storytelling, action, and justice. The presenters’ goal is to share a renewed view of storytelling. Join the virtual event on Friday, October 22 at 11:00 a.m. EDT.

Michelle de Leon (she/her) is a master’s student in Ecology and Environmental Sciences and participant in the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship on Enhancing Conservation Science. She is interested in social-ecological systems, community resilience, and collaborative approaches to science. Leanne Loo (she/her) studies Anthropology; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; and Public Health at Tufts University. Her research and organizing are centered in abolition, decolonial feminisms, and transnational solidarity.
