Building Robust & Inclusive Democracy

The Petey Greene Program at Tufts

We help recruit, train, and coordinate undergraduate and graduate student volunteers to serve as academic tutors and teaching assistants, with the aim of supporting the academic goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through high-quality educational programs.

We help recruit, train, and coordinate undergraduate and graduate student volunteers to serve as academic tutors and teaching assistants, with the aim of supporting the academic goals of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people through high-quality educational programs.

Founded in 2008, our parent organization focused on the pre-collegiate level, despite great need: Only 20% of formerly incarcerated people have a high school diploma, one third have a GED, and less than 4% have a college degree. Without a high school credential, unemployment rates among formerly incarcerated people range from 25% to 60%. We work to disrupt this cycle by helping our students obtain a high school or other credential and prepare for postsecondary success.

The Petey Greene Programs (PGP) are designed to empower and equip our participants with skills and knowledge needed to pursue their academic and professional goals. If you are interested in helping with these aims, please apply below.

At the PGP, nobody is discounted and we hold firmly to the understanding that we are responsible for each other. Everyone deserves a chance, which is why we work to ensure that all formerly and currently incarcerated people have access to high-quality education.
