Join Tisch College and the School of Engineering (SOE) for a special lecture with statistician, big data expert, award-winning professor and co-host of the PBS NOVA series NOVA Wonders, Dr. Talithia Williams! Well known for her popular TED Talk, “Own Your Body’s Data,” where she extols the value of statistics in quantifying personal health, Dr. Williams is renowned for her work to demystify the mathematical process in fun and unique ways, exciting many about STEM education and its possibilities. Her lecture, titled "Data Driven Solutions for Eliminating Health Disparities" will focus on how data is essential for understanding social determinants of health and developing innovative interventions to address unique populations.
Dr. Williams has worked at NASA, National Security Agency and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and has partnered with the World Health Organization. She’s the author of Power in Numbers: The Rebel Women of Mathematics and has narrated several science documentary films including Hindenburg: The New Evidence, Our Beautiful Planet, Secrets in our DNA, and the joint BBC and NOVA 5-part series, The Universe Revealed. A proud graduate of Spelman College, Howard University and Rice University, Dr. Williams’ research involves developing statistical models that emphasize the spatial and temporal structure of data and applying them to problems in the environment.
This event is jointly presented by the SOE’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Colloquium Series and by Tisch College’s Solomont Speaker Series. It is generously cosponsored by the Africana Center, the Mathematics Department and the Community Health Department.
