In the summer of 2022, Tufts University made the decision to close the Institute for Global Leadership (IGL) as a Provost-based institute and to transition its programs to the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life.

For more than three decades, IGL’s offerings have connected theory to practice, engaged students in the complexity of global issues, and developed new generations of effective and ethical leaders. This work is aligned to the mission and vision of Tisch College, which has grown into a vibrant platform for local and global partnerships, student programs, courses and service opportunities, and groundbreaking research focused on robust, inclusive democracy.

This transition aims to establish a sustainable institutional home for this important programming, further align these offerings with the University’s civic mission and position them for growth and wider impact. The process of program and staff collaboration is well underway, with the advice and voices of students at the forefront. Strategic integration will continue throughout the 2022-23 academic year, and courses and programs like EPIIC (Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship) are being fully supported.

Tisch College embraces student-led, transformational learning opportunities that build the skills of local, national and global civic leadership and welcomes the opportunity to build on IGL’s strong legacy of student leadership, global impact and a robust and engaged alumni network.
