Biography
Benedetta Giovanola holds the Jean Monnet Chair Ethics for inclusive digital Europe co-funded by the European Union and is Full Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Macerata (Italy), where she has also been Deputy Rector and Vice-Rector for international relations.
Since 2018 she has been visiting professor at Tufts University; previously she held visiting positions at the UIBE in Beijing, at KU Leuven and was Huygens Fellow at the Radboud University Nijmegen. She is the past vice-president of the Italian Association of Moral Philosophy and the President and co-founder of GAIA srl, a university spin-off and innovative start up focused on AI ethics and governance.
Her research interests are in moral and political philosophy, business ethics, theories of justice, media ethics, and in the ethical questions raised by digital technologies and artificial intelligence, especially regarding fairness, social justice and inclusion.
On these topics she is both PI and external ethics advisor of a number of international projects. She has given more than 300 talks in academic institutions in Europe, Asia and North America, has published 9 books and more than 200 articles in leading international journals and collections. Among her recent publications: Ethics for Human-Centered Education in the Age of AI, in "Entrepreneurship and Digital Humanities" (2024, with P. Granata); Ethics of Artificial Intelligence for Cultural Heritage: Opportunities and Challenges, "IEEE Transactions on Technology and Society", (2024, with S. Tiribelli, S. Pansoni, E. Frontoni); Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy: On the Ethical Dimension of Recommender Systems, "Topoi" (2023, with M. De Caro and S. Bonicalzi); Weapons of Moral Construction? On the Value of Fairness in Algorithmic Decision-Making, "Ethics and Information Technology" (2022, with S. Tiribelli).
