Honos Civicus at the School of Medicine
Apply to Honos Civicus - TUSM (MD and PA Programs)
The Honos Civicus application will open on Tuesday, May 26.
At the core of Tisch College’s student programs work is our civic learning framework. We support students in the development of knowledge, skills, values, and behaviors to enhance their:
- Civic identity: Enhance sense of self and purpose as a responsible, engaged citizen of the world
- Civic leadership: Cultivate collaborative relationships to communicate effectively and work with diverse groups of people toward collective goals for the common good
- Civic agency: Address structural challenges and opportunities in society, including systemic inequities and root causes of social issues to promote positive social change
Honos Civicus, Latin for “Civic Honors,” celebrates and publicly recognizes graduating students who have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to community service and civic engagement during their studies at Tufts University. Inductees have the opportunity to celebrate and reflect on their commitment to engagement in communities around the world.
**You must be a graduating student to be eligible to apply for Honos Civicus**
Strong Candidates Will Have
- A demonstrated commitment to public service and civic engagement beyond the minimum expected for degree requirements (The CSL requirement for MD students; the APE for MD/MPH students; the community service requirement for the PA program).
- Demonstrated leadership and/or longitudinal dedication within civic life activities (including service, advocacy, and other social, racial and health justice endeavors).
- Made a positive impact.
- An outstanding record of professionalism and ethical behavior.
- A strong academic record.
Benefits
The benefits of membership in the Honos Civicus Society include:
- Recognition at a ceremony of Class of 2027 Tufts students accepted into the Honos Civicus Society.
- Recognition at graduation, with a notation in the commencement program and an Honos Civicus pin for the commencement gown.
- Features on the Tisch College website and other Tufts University publications.
- Membership in the Honos Civicus alumni group.
Review
Applications will be reviewed by the Honos Civicus review committee which includes representatives from Tisch College of Civic Life and the School of Medicine.
Timeline
The application timeline for the Class of 2027 will be:
- July 23, 11:59pm: MD Program Applications due;
- Monday, August 3, 11:59pm: PA Program Applications due
- Early September – Announcement of Class of 2027 MD Program Honos Civicus Society; PA announcement in October
- May date TBD – 2027 Honos Civicus Induction Ceremony (Medford - building location TBD). PA program recipients to be recognized at their graduation ceremony in the winter.
